Read and write optimization for protected area of memory

US Patent 8,775,827
July 8, 2014
A system (and method) to update content of a secure area of a secure digital (SD) card is disclosed. The system performs a first authenticated key exchange to access the secure area of the secure digital memory. The system reads content from the secure area in response to successful performance of the first authenticated key exchange. The system modifies the content in a memory of a computer system. The system performs a second authenticated key exchange to access the secure area of the secure digital card in preparation to write to the secure area of the secure digital memory. The system then writes modified content to the secure area of the secure digital memory in response to successful performance of the second authenticated key exchange.

Key creation and rotation for data encryption

US Patent 8,774,403
July 8, 2014
Embodiments are directed towards enabling cryptographic key rotation without disrupting cryptographic operations. If key rotation is initiated, a transitional key may be generated by encrypting the current key with a built-in system key. A new key may be generated based one at least one determined key parameter. Next, the new key may be activated by the one or more key holders. If the new key is activated, it may be designated as the new current key. The new current key may be employed to encrypt the transitional key and store it in a key array. Each additional rotated key may be stored in the key array after it is encrypted by the current cryptographic key. Further, in response to a submission of an unencrypted query value, one or more encrypted values that correspond to a determined number of rotated cryptographic keys are generated.

Electrical stimulation leads

US Patent 8,774,939
July 8, 2014
An implantable lead has an inner core, a plurality of coiled conductor guides, and a plurality of conductors. The inner core defines a plurality of lumens. Each coiled conductor guide defines a plurality of helical lumens. Each coiled conductor guide is disposed in a coiled arrangement over a portion of the inner core. Each of the conductors electrically couples at least one electrode to at least one terminal. At least one of the conductors includes a plurality of units. Each unit includes a first conductor segment extending along the inner core from a beginning point to a first position, a coiled conductor segment disposed at least partially in one of the lumens of the coiled conductor guides and extending from the first position to the second position, and a second conductor segment extending along the inner core from the second position to an endpoint.

Treatment of head lice infestations

US Patent 8,770,208
July 8, 2014
Techniques and apparatus for treating head lice infestations are described. Some embodiments include a nit (louse egg) detection plate that provides a surface against which irregularities of a hair of a person are more apparent to a viewer than without the detection plate. The detection plate may also include a serrated edge that is operable to separate hairs of the person for viewing over the detection plate. Other embodiments provide a method for using the detection plate to detect and remove nits from hairs of a person. The method may include placing a thin layer of hair of a person over the detection plate, detecting nits by viewing the hairs against a backdrop provided by the detection plate, and removing any detected nits.

Transmitter with adaptive back-off

US Patent 8,774,298
July 8, 2014
A transmitter for transmitting data symbols using an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) scheme, the transmitter comprising: a modulator for generating a plurality of mutually orthogonal sub-carriers, each of the plurality of sub-carriers being modulated with a stream of data symbols to be transmitted; an amplifier for amplifying a signal containing the plurality of modulated sub-carriers for transmission of the signal; and a symbol processor for processing the data symbols of the plurality of sub-carriers, the symbol processor being configured to compute a plurality of EVM values for each data symbol to be transmitted, each of the plurality of EVM values being computed based on a different one of a plurality of candidate back-off values for the amplifier, and to select one of the plurality of candidate back-off values to apply to the transmitter for the data symbol based on the computed EVM values.

Apparatus, systems and methods for facilitating social networking via a media device

US Patent 8,769,422
July 1, 2014
Techniques for facilitating social networking via a media device are described. Some embodiments provide a social networking facilitator (“SNF”) as part of a media device, such as a set-top box that is configured to receive media content events from a broadcast system, such as a satellite broadcast system. As the media device presents a media content event, a user can share, via the SNF, information about the presented media content event with members of his social network. In particular, the SNF prepares a message that includes information about or from the presented media content event, such as a title, a channel, a summary, rating, video clip, or the like. This message can then be edited by the user, such as by adding a comment or rating, before being transmitted by the SNF a social networking system, to be forwarded as a notification to members of the user’s social network.

Method and system for providing persistence in a secure network access

US Patent 8,769,265
July 1, 2014
A system and method for providing persistence in a secure network access by using a client certificate sent by a client device to maintain the identity of a target. A security handshake is performed with a client device to establish a secure session. A target is determined. A client certificate is associated with the target. During subsequent secure sessions, the client certificate is used to maintain persistent communications between the client and a target. A session ID can be used in combination with the client certificate, by identifying the target based on the session ID or the client certificate, depending on which one is available in a client message.

Operational-related data computation engine
